Jazz was born in New Orleans in the late1800’s early 1900’s in an area of New Orleans known as “Storyville”.It was the red light district well known for its speak easy*s and honkeytonks.
Jazz represents a mixing of many different cultures and their music.During the years of slavery the music developed from work songs and spirituals. This music blended with White western music led to the basis of what we now call jazz, the blues, ragtime, new orleans, dixieland swing, mainstream and so on.
Some of the greats of the early years included King oliver,Sidney Bechet,Kid Ory,Louis Armstrong but to name a few.
During the 1920’s big band swing evolved. The bands of Fletcher Henderson,Duke Ellington,Benny Goodman Count Basie were among the leaders.Swing grew in popularity during the 30’s and 40’s bringing
together the best musicians of the day who played after hours in jam sessions in clubs and bars which led to the formation of small groups after the big bands started to loose their appeal in the 50’s.Many small groups formed under the leadership of great names like Ben Webster,Coleman Hawkins,Lester Young,Charlie Bird and many more.
The years mentioned were for me the best years of jazz however time and jazz marches on and many new musicians have come and replaced the old but I shall leave it there.
